An Elementary School’s Student Vegetable Garden is an education tool that connects the classroom to the real world and gives children hands on skills and experience raising food and caring for the environment.
The Bears Care Garden project has found great support within the Beachwood Elementary School and within the Toms River school district. A combination of grants and successful fundraising along with working in conjunction with the Beachwood Elementary School PTO is sure to secure the long term success of the Bears Care Garden. This is the first year and we’ve made great progress in getting the vegetable garden up and running while planning for new projects and growth in the years to follow.
“School gardens are a wonderful way to use the schoolyard as a classroom, reconnect students with the natural world and the true source of their food, and teach them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts and skills that integrate with several subjects, such as math, science, art, health and physical education, and social studies, as well as several educational goals, including personal and social responsibility.” from http://www.greenhearted.org
We are continuing to recruit local families who would like to collaborate with the students and teachers of Beachwood Elementary. We are currently in the process of building the engraved paver block walkway around the interior of the garden and students and teachers are actively planting out the seedlings they started indoors early this spring.

Beachwood Elementary school is located in Ocean County New Jersey. This elementary school garden project is made possible by a garden committee comprised of a group of parents, school administrators, teachers and community members who wanted to start and maintain a school garden. School gardens are an excellent way for children learn how to grow and know the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables, supplement classroom instruction and spend more time outdoors. The School Garden Coordinator is Mrs. Theresa Lindemann.
